Testing our beliefs, our institution of Democracy is not only being challenged but threatened. Some instruct us to fear government versus celebrating all that it provides us. Citizen Joy is a national coalition of artists, arts organizations, and educators from all disciplines that are using art to  cut through the doom and gloom about politics, explore what we have (and could lose) as citizens, and energize people to do what they can do to protect democratic rights and freedoms (like voting!).

On the Wings of Freedom is a part of my Voting Rights series Make a Way isinspired by the words and actions of civil rights activist John Lewis: “we will find a way, make a way out of no way.”  I began to play with V shapes, creating V is for Voting, Barbie Votes. Here, the V’s have doubled, becoming wings, representing ‘wings of freedom.’

I offer gratitude for our most sacred right, the right of every citizen to vote in our Democracy.  The ‘wings of freedom’ are a reminder that we can never give up the fight to encourage access to voting for all, to eliminate restrictions, to protect those in marginalized communities, and to safeguard and increase safety nets for those who have less.

The Art Cloth Network is an art organization of 31 textile artists from North America. We have a juried, annual, themed call for entry for member artists. Unfolding stimulated a variety of interpretations. What is revealed when a story is told, when a gift is unwrapped, and a beautiful textile is opened for all to see? Did the artists think of concepts such as evolving, growing, revealing?

Ileana’s Tree of Life and Silk Road will be a part of this beautiful show.

Throughout history artists have produced art in a variety of media and styles, each piece a unique statement reflective of the artist’s choices about subject matter, mood, technique and process. In Art Movements in Fiber, SAQA (Studio Art Quilters Association) Northern California & Northern Nevada regional artists were asked to choose an art movement (Impressionism, Cubism, etc.) or genre and explain how it has inspired or influenced their work.

Two of Ileana’s pieces will be on display, Between Waking and Dreaming and Princess Andromeda.

My journey in textile art began as a child. Over the years, I have explored weaving, fiber sculpture, mixed media, sewn collage, art quilts, art cloth and surface design. Inspiration comes from my Romanian and Peruvian heritages, studies in art history and textiles, workshops with global artisans, and expressive art in my work as a therapist. It is my desire to connect with others through themes of culture, community, climate and justice.
